Why The Cure Runs on a Subscription Model

Dear Reader,

As the creator and voice behind The Cure, I often receive questions about our subscription model. Today, I want to address this directly.

My name is Dr. Kris, and I've spent more than a decade working as a scientist in biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. Over the years, I've developed CRISPR-based genetic medicines for conditions such as HIV, sickle cell disease, and beta-thalassemia. The knowledge and expertise gained from these experiences fuel the content you read each week in The Cure.

Every Saturday, I pour hours into producing this newsletter. I dive into the world of emerging medical technology and clinical trials, sifting through the information, making sense of the complex, and translating it into language that we can all understand. I include three to five stories in each issue, each one centered around your requests. I delve deep into the science, explain how the treatments work, compare different technologies, and provide links to join clinical trials.

However, running The Cure is not without its expenses. There are the costs for website and newsletter hosting, domain names, and access to the scientific publications I need for my research. This is where the subscription fee comes in.

Some may ask, "Why not simply use advertising to cover these costs?" The answer is simple and something very close to my heart. I'm not here to serve advertisers – I'm here to serve you. In a model funded by advertising, you, the reader, become the product, and the advertiser becomes the customer. I chose not to follow that path.

I charge $4.99 per month or $54.99 for an annual subscription. These amounts were carefully calculated, considering the costs of running the service and the time and expertise that go into every edition.

To those of you who are part of the free tier, you have access to monthly articles, and I value your presence in our community. To our premium members, thanks for trusting me and diving in fully.

I want to close by sharing some of the messages I've received from you, our subscribers.

"Powerful, terrific, and incredibly brilliant work you’re doing. The governments should be swamping you with endless resources."

"I recently requested to unsubscribe because I was not getting access to the newsletter after signing up and paying for it. Unfortunately, there's a huge variety of online scammers & it makes the field skeptical at best. But after this email, you seem more, how can I put this - Real. I have been with my partner for 22 years. I have an autoimmune condition, and any hope to extend my time with my best friend is worth a shot. I believe in science and in CRISPR research and breakthroughs. I will re-subscribe."

"You guys are amazing! Hopefully, soon you can start looking into Tourette syndrome and other tick disorders"

"I always love your CRISPR news!"

These messages remind me daily why I do what I do. Thank you for trusting me, for being a part of this journey, and for being a member of The Cure community.

With warmth and respect,

Dr. Kris at thecure@ crisprclassroom.org
